Weekly market update, Oct 16, 2026
Indian equity indices staged a strong comeback this week, with the Nifty 50 rising 2.77% and the Sensex surging 3.11%, as renewed buying in information technology (IT) stocks, easing global bond-yield pressures and resilient domestic institutional inflows lifted investor sentiment. The rally was further supported by a decline in crude oil prices amid expectations of increased Russian diesel supplies to global markets, which helped improve overall market sentiment. The broader market indices, BSE 150 Midcap and BSE 250 Smallcap rose by 0.56% and 0.46% respectively. On the BSE sectoral front, BSE IT was the major gainer, up 10.91%, followed Auto and Metal, up 3.41% and 1.85%, respectively. BSE Healthcare was the major loser, down 1.15%, followed by FMCG, down 0.27%.
Looking ahead, Indian equities heading into a holiday-shortened week with investors tracking key domestic and global triggers, including the Reserve Bank of India Monetary Policy Committee meeting minutes, UK inflation data, US labour market readings and business activity indicators, alongside the much-awaited initial public offering of Jio Platforms Ltd. Apart from scheduled events, market participants will monitor Q2 FY27 earnings, foreign institutional investor flows, movements in the US dollar index and Treasury yields, crude oil prices and global equity market trends.
