Weekly market update, Jul 17, 2026

Indian equity markets resumed weekly gains as earnings gathered pace, and extending their recovery despite ongoing geopolitical tensions, higher crude oil prices, and lingering uncertainty over the global interest-rate outlook. For the week, The NSE Nifty 50 and the BSE Sensex gained 0.53% and 0.75% respectively.  Broader market indices underperformed, with the BSE 150 Midcap and BSE 250 Smallcap declining by around 0.46% and 0.81% respectively. On the BSE sectoral front, it was mixed. BSE IT was the major gainer, up 3.73% followed by Bankex, up 0.77% and Auto, up 0.51%. BSE Metal was the major loser, down 1.71% followed by FMCG, down 1.10% and Healthcare, down 0.30%.

Looking ahead, Investors focus in the coming week will remain firmly on the evolving geopolitical situation in the Middle East as tensions between the United States and Iran continue to dominate global market sentiment. Beyond corporate earnings, market participants will continue to monitor foreign institutional investor (FII) flows, global bond yields, movements in the rupee, crude oil prices, and key US macroeconomic data for further direction. The progress of the southwest monsoon will also remain an important domestic monitorable, as rainfall patterns will have a direct bearing on agricultural output, food inflation, rural consumption, and the broader economic outlook.
